About this coinHistory

The 2013-D Kennedy half breaks the recent low-mintage pattern of the mint-set-only era at 4,600,000 pieces, a sharp jump from the 1.7-million 2012-D figure and a structural counterpart to the 5-million 2013-P. The 400,000-piece gap between the two mints reflects bag and roll direct-sale residue arithmetic plus the slightly different scheduling at each facility. The 2013-D continues to be a non-circulating product available through the standard Uncirculated Coin Set and direct-sale roll and bag programs, with no bank-channel release. The output increase across the 2013 pair tracks expanded Mint direct-sale programs for the year, after which 2014 mintages settled back down to the 2-million range. Composition stayed the standard post-1971 clad recipe of 75% copper, 25% nickel outer layers bonded to a pure copper core, 11.34 g at 30.6 mm with a reeded edge. The D mintmark sits above the date, to the right of Kennedy's neck truncation. Gilroy Roberts's GR initials remain at the truncation and Frank Gasparro's FG sits to the right of the eagle's tail feathers.

Strike quality on the 2013-D continues the Denver edge over Philadelphia that runs across the mint-set-only stretch. The eagle's chest feathers and Kennedy's hair above the ear come up sharp on the typical example, dies are rotated before terminal wear, and cellophane packaging prevents the commercial handling that historically capped Kennedy grades. The contact-mark cluster on the high cheek and jaw is mild on most pieces. Counterfeiting is a non-issue at this composition and modern production date. Authentication is routine for the cupronickel clad: verify a genuine reeded edge and the layered rim under magnification. The principal practical concern remains identifying coins that have been pulled from mint sets and offered as Mint State raw, though the higher 2013 production volume means original-packaging examples are easier to locate at fair pricing than for the leaner surrounding years.

For year-set and Denver-set collectors the 2013-D is an inexpensive placeholder acquired through the standard mint-set extraction path: purchase the intact 2013 Uncirculated Coin Set and pull the half, which typically grades MS66 or MS67 from the cellophane. Bank-roll hunting produces nothing because the issue never reached banks. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC populations cluster at MS66 and MS67 from mint-set and direct-sale roll extractions, with MS68 effectively condition-rare. Raw examples sit just above face value. The 4.6-million Denver mintage paired with the 5-million Philadelphia output marks 2013 as the high-water year for the entire 2002-2014 mint-set-only stretch, with prices structurally lower than the leaner surrounding years even at matching grades. For date-and-mint run collectors the 2013 pair offers welcome supply ease in the longer arc.
