About this coinHistory

The 2016-D Kennedy half is the Denver business-strike entry for the year and matches the Philadelphia output at 2,100,000 pieces, the second matched P/D pair in the late mint-set-only stretch following the 2015 parity. The 2.1-million figure represents a 200,000-coin pullback from the 2015 pair and tracks reduced 2016 Mint Set order volume rather than any production-side cause. The issue exists exclusively through the standard 2016 Uncirculated Coin Set with no bank distribution. Composition stayed the standard post-1971 clad recipe of 75% copper, 25% nickel outer layers bonded to a pure copper core, 11.34 g at 30.6 mm with a reeded edge. The D mintmark sits above the date, to the right of Kennedy's neck truncation. Gilroy Roberts's GR initials remain at the truncation and Frank Gasparro's FG sits to the right of the eagle's tail feathers.

Strike quality on the 2016-D continues the Denver edge over Philadelphia that runs across the mint-set-only stretch. The eagle's chest feathers and Kennedy's hair above the ear come up sharp on the typical example. Dies are rotated before terminal wear, finished coins skip commercial bagging, and protective cellophane prevents the bag-and-sorter handling that historically capped Kennedy grades. The familiar contact-mark cluster on the high cheek and jaw is mild because no piece sees commercial handling. Authentication concerns at this date reduce to mintmark identification, with P versus D placement above the date the only field a buyer needs to verify, and the cleaner late-era catalog without Satin Finish disambiguation keeps the 2016 pair structurally simple. Modern minting equipment produces fewer outlier strikes than the pre-2002 commerce era. Counterfeit pressure on modern cupronickel halves remains effectively zero because bullion value sits at face.

For year-set and Denver-set collectors the 2016-D is a low-cost placeholder acquired through the standard 2016 Uncirculated Coin Set. Raw examples sell just above face value with small premiums at MS66 and MS67 and condition rarity at MS68. PCGS and NGC populations cluster at MS66 and MS67 from mint-set extractions, with the Denver half-step strike-quality edge translating into a marginally higher proportion of MS67 grades than Philadelphia for the year. Bank-roll hunting produces nothing because the coin never entered banks. The matched 2016 P/D mintage simplifies acquisition arithmetic, and Denver-set collectors will find the 2016-D pairs cleanly with the 2015-D bracketing it and the asymmetric 2017-D split bracketing it on the other side. The 2016 pair sits in the middle of the closing six-year arc of the mint-set-only stretch.
