About this coinHistory

The 2021-D Kennedy half is the first Denver circulation strike of the series since 2001, the Denver counterpart to the 2021-P that closed the 2002-2020 mint-set-only stretch. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen authorized the resumption of general-circulation production in 2021, and the 7,700,000 Denver mintage put 2.3 million more coins into commerce from Denver than Philadelphia for the year. The pattern of higher Denver output relative to Philadelphia tracks the geographic loading the Mint's circulating coin program adopted on the restart, with Denver dies running longer pulls into bank-channel sorters serving the central and western Federal Reserve districts. Composition stayed the standard post-1971 clad recipe of 75% copper, 25% nickel outer layers bonded to a pure copper core, 11.34 g at 30.6 mm with a reeded edge. The D mintmark sits above the date; Gilroy Roberts's GR initials are at the truncation of Kennedy's neck and Frank Gasparro's heraldic eagle reverse, with FG to the right of the tail feathers, carries the original 1964 design unchanged.

Strike quality on the 2021-D runs slightly tighter than the Philadelphia counterpart, a Denver edge that has held across most of the cupronickel era. Hair detail above the ear and the eagle's chest feathers come up sharp on the typical example, and weak strikes are uncommon. The familiar contact-mark cluster on the high cheek and jaw appears at modest levels because Denver bag-and-sorter handling resumed in 2021 alongside Philadelphia's, the first such handling pattern for the denomination since 2001. Authentication concerns at this date are limited to mintmark identification (D placement above the date) and to separating original bank-channel coins from mint-set extractions, which share the dies but differ at the margins in handling-mark distribution. Counterfeit pressure on modern cupronickel halves remains effectively zero because the bullion value sits at face, and the structural concern at this date is misattribution between the two 2021 facilities rather than fakes from elsewhere.

For year-set and Denver-set collectors the 2021-D is the Denver bookend that closes the mint-set-only stretch from the Denver side. Examples turn up in bank-rolled customer pickups in regions where the Mint's circulating shipments cleared into commerce, with central and western states more productive than the East Coast on average. Raw examples sell just above face value with small premiums at MS66 and MS67, and PCGS and NGC populations cluster at MS66 and MS67 from both mint-set extractions and original-roll submissions. Bank-roll hunting is viable at this date for the first time in two decades.
