About this coinHistory

The 1840 Medium Letters half dollar carries a reverse die that does not belong on a Seated coin. When the Mint turned over to the new design in 1839, a few unused reverse dies left from the recently retired Capped Bust Half Dollar program stayed on hand. One of them met an 1840 obverse and produced this transitional subtype, with the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA punched in the taller, wider "Medium Letters" style of the older hub rather than the compact lettering of the new Reverse of 1839. It is the scarcer of the two 1840 reverse subtypes and a one-year-only holdover, struck only because the older die was already in stock.

The attribution diagnostic is the legend itself, and it is the single most common point of confusion on this coin. Look at the height and weight of the characters in UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Medium Letters shows visibly taller characters with thicker vertical strokes and less open space between the tops of the letters and the rim. Small Letters reads as a shorter, lighter, more compact line with clear breathing room above each character. The eagle is also rendered slightly larger on the Medium Letters reverse, and its claws appear unclenched. Strike runs soft at the eagle's claws and the upper shield lines. Mint State examples are markedly tougher than Mint State Small Letters, with combined certified populations running only a small fraction of the more common subtype. Most survivors live in VF through XF, and choice AU coins already command a meaningful premium over the Small Letters at the same grade.

For a date-set collector, the 1840 Medium Letters is the harder half of a two-coin year rather than a casual pickup. Most buyers find their example in VF or XF, where the legend diagnostic is fully readable and the price stays reasonable; Mint State coins require patience and a willingness to wait. Type-set builders generally use the Small Letters as their single 1840 entry and leave Medium Letters to specialists, but variety-set collectors treat it as a required slot. Prioritize a clean strike on the reverse legend over surface preservation alone, since a worn reverse defeats the point of owning the subtype.
