About this coinHistory

The 1840 Small Letters half dollar is the standard Philadelphia production of the year, struck with the so-called Reverse of 1839 hub. That hub places the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA in noticeably shorter, more compact letters set well in from the rim, the lettering style that had carried over from the 1839 No Drapery rollout. Philadelphia struck 1,435,008 half dollars in 1840, a figure split between this Small Letters issue and a transitional Medium Letters reverse punched from a leftover Capped Bust hub. Small Letters represents the majority of that combined total and is the year's accepted "normal" issue, while Medium Letters reads as the scarcer holdover variant. The coin also marks Christian Gobrecht's design settling into its mature form with the elbow drapery folds added in late 1839.

Strike on early-1840s Philadelphia Seated halves runs respectable but uneven. Liberty's head and the cap above it routinely come up soft, the shield's vertical lines can wash out on the lower right, and the eagle's claws and leg feathers are the first details to give way under a tired die. Surfaces tend toward satin luster, and the date is usually crisp even when central detail is mushy. Population reports across major services list this as one of the more available 1840s Seated halves in collector grades, second only to the 1843 in Mint State frequency, with gem MS65 examples present but uncommon. The attribution diagnostic against Medium Letters is straightforward: examine the legend itself. Small Letters carries shorter, narrower characters in UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with clear space between the tops of the letters and the dentils; Medium Letters shows visibly taller, heavier characters that crowd closer to the rim. The distinction is readable on any coin grading Fine or better.

For a collector building a Seated half date set, the 1840 Small Letters is the affordable, accessible 1840 entry, with circulated examples plentiful and a healthy Mint State pipeline up through MS63 and MS64. Most type collectors fold it into the No Motto subset without a second thought; variety collectors pair it with the Medium Letters reverse as a two-coin year. Look for original gray patina, full date, and legible eagle feather detail rather than chasing the highest numeric grade.
