About this coinHistory

The 1842-O Medium Date, Reverse of 1842 is the common, available face of an 1842-O delivery whose combined total reached 957,000 half dollars across multiple die pairings, and it carries the bulk of that figure on its own. The year was a hub transition. New Orleans opened 1842 still working through the older die stock the Seated design had used since launch: a Small Date obverse with compact, lightly punched numerals, mated to the Reverse of 1839 with its noticeably smaller legend letters. Once the branch mint exhausted those dies, it shifted to the modernized pairing that became standard for the years ahead, a Medium Date obverse with taller, heavier digits struck against the Reverse of 1842 with its bolder, larger letters. This combination is therefore the endpoint of that mid-year retooling, not the transitional rarity. The far scarcer Small Date / Reverse of 1839 1842-O, by contrast, is a low-double-digit survivor across all grades.

Strike on this issue follows the workmanship typical for early No Motto branch-mint production: generally serviceable, with softness predictably parked at the high points. Liberty's head often shows weakness at the hair detail and cap, the central shield's arrow points and lower lines can come through soft, and the eagle's claws, particularly the talons gripping the arrows, frequently lack full separation. Grade distribution leans heavily into the VG-through-XF band where commerce parked the surviving population; AU coins are available but selective, and Mint State survivors thin sharply from MS62 upward. Attribution requires a dual-confirmation check. The obverse must show the taller, thicker Medium Date numerals with the crosslet 4, AND the reverse must show the larger-letter Reverse of 1842 legend. Trusting a single-side photograph is the classic trap, since the rarer Small Date / Reverse of 1839 pairing trades at a substantial multiple of this issue's market.

For a date-set or branch-mint collector, the 1842-O Medium Date is the natural single-coin entry for the year and the easiest of the 1842-O subtypes to source. Most buyers settle on a problem-free VF or XF, where the diagnostic reads clearly and pricing stays approachable; AU coins call for a longer search, and choice Mint State examples reward genuine patience. Original surfaces, free of cleaning and with honest gray patina, are worth the wait at any grade. For broader die-pairing context, see the Seated Liberty Half Dollar series history.
