The 1842 Small Date, Reverse of 1842 Seated Liberty Half Dollar captures a Philadelphia year caught mid-transition. Two design tools changed during this calendar year: the obverse moved from Small Date logotype punches to a larger Medium Date logotype, and the reverse hub shifted from the original Small Letters layout (the so-called Reverse of 1839) to a heavier Medium Letters layout that the Mint would carry forward. Because the obverse and reverse changes did not happen at the same moment, three distinct die pairings reached the presses, and this subtype represents the middle one. The Small Date obverse, still serviceable, was mated to the freshly introduced Reverse of 1842. The Small Date is roughly two and a half times scarcer than the Medium Date overall, so this pairing occupies a middle-scarcity slot, more elusive than the common Medium Date / Reverse of 1842 but easier to find than the rare Small Date / Reverse of 1839 transitional pairing.
Strike quality on early-1840s Philadelphia halves runs from adequate to good, with the soft points predictable: head detail on Liberty, stars closest to the rim, and the eagle's leg feathers. Planchet preparation was generally clean, though adjustment marks (file lines used to bring overweight planchets down to standard before striking) appear on a meaningful share of survivors. Grade distribution follows the early Seated pattern, heavily weighted to the Very Good through Extremely Fine band where the coins did their working life, thinning fast above About Uncirculated, and reaching Mint State only as a true condition rarity. The attribution diagnostic for this exact subtype is a two-step check, both elements required. On the obverse, the date numerals are noticeably shorter than the Medium Date version, with the 4 showing a plain crossbar rather than the crosslet end found on the Medium Date logotype. On the reverse, the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination HALF DOL. appear in the heavier Medium Letters of the Reverse of 1842 rather than the more compact Small Letters of the Reverse of 1839. Pair the Small Date obverse with Medium Letters reverse and the coin is correctly identified; either element alone is not enough.
For collectors, this subtype rewards patience. Generic 1842 halves trade as common type material, but a properly attributed Small Date with Reverse of 1842 carries a modest premium and is genuinely harder to locate in upper circulated grades when buyers insist on certified attribution. Holdered examples from PCGS or NGC are the most efficient route; raw coins reward careful comparison of date width and reverse letter size before purchase. Within a date-and-mint set, this piece fills the 1842 P slot for collectors who want one of each documented 1842 Philadelphia subtype rather than a single representative coin.
