1842 Small Date, Reverse of 1839

The 1842 half dollar from Philadelphia exists in three recognized subtypes, and the Small Date with Reverse of 1839 is the scarcest of them. The other two pair the small date obverse with the newer reverse hub introduced during 1842, or use the medium date obverse that became standard later in the year. Only this subtype carries the older reverse design held over from the opening years of the series, and that pairing represents the briefest production window of the three. The combined 2,012,764-piece mintage on the info card covers all three subtypes, so it understates how few coins actually belong to this one. Attribution requires both halves of the pairing to be present. The Small Date obverse uses a date punch that sits noticeably more compact than the Medium Date logotype, with the 4 and 2 closely spaced. The Reverse of 1839 carries smaller letters in UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and HALF DOL., a holdover from the hub used at the start of the design. A coin showing the small date alone is not enough; the reverse legend size must also match the older hub. Strike tends to show reasonable definition on Liberty's head and shield, with some softness on the eagle's claws and upper feathering. Grade distribution is the real story. Circulated survivors turn up with patience, but Mint State coins are genuinely scarce, and gem pieces are rare enough that auction appearances draw attention from the Liberty Seated specialist community.

The collecting position today is shaped by who is looking. A date-and-mintmark collector building a basic Seated half set is usually content with any 1842 Philadelphia coin and rarely engages with the subtype split. The buyer who pursues this subtype is almost always a variety specialist working from the Wiley-Bugert framework, and that narrower demand pool keeps premiums orderly in circulated grades while compressing supply sharply at the top. The coin rewards reference familiarity more than checkbook size, and its true scarcity becomes visible only once a collector understands the three-way 1842 split.
