1842 Medium Date

The 1842 Medium Date is the workhorse of an 1842 Philadelphia delivery that totaled roughly 2,012,764 half dollars across multiple obverse-and-reverse pairings, and it carries the bulk of that figure on its own. Earlier in the year, the Mint had still been using Christian Gobrecht's original obverse hub paired with the Reverse of 1839, the same compact-lettering die introduced when the Seated design launched. Mid-year, engravers retired both elements: a new obverse hub punched the date in noticeably taller, heavier numerals, and a new Reverse of 1842 with larger letters replaced the older die. The Medium Date / Reverse of 1842 combination that resulted is the modernized, standard-issue version of the type, and it accounts for roughly two-and-a-half times the survivors of the Small Date varieties that bracket it.

Strike on 1842 Philadelphia halves tracks the workmanship typical for early-1840s Mother Mint production: generally adequate, with softness occasionally turning up on the high points of Liberty's head, on the stars opposite the figure, and on the eagle's leg feathers. Grade distribution leans heavily into the VG-through-XF band where circulation parked the population, with AU coins available but selective and Mint State survivors thinning sharply at MS63 and above. The attribution diagnostic is the date itself. Medium Date numerals stand visibly taller, with thicker strokes and the crossbar of the 4 ending in a small horizontal crosslet; the Small Date varieties use shorter, lighter punches and a 4 with a plain, square-cut crossbar. The diagnostic is fully readable on any coin grading Fine or better. Within the Medium Date subtype, the Wiley-Bugert reference recognizes several minor die marriages, including the WB-11 repunched-date pairing where doubling shows clearly at the base of the digits.

For a date-set or type-set collector, the 1842 Medium Date is the natural single-coin entry for the year and the easiest of the 1842 Philadelphia varieties to source. Most buyers settle on a problem-free VF or XF, where the date diagnostic is unambiguous and price stays moderate; AU coins require a longer search, and choice Mint State examples call for genuine commitment.
