About this coinHistory

The 1855 Arrows, 55 Over 54 Seated Liberty Half Dollar is the only true overdate in the Seated half-dollar series, and that distinction alone earns it a place in the variety canon. An overdate is exactly what the name implies: a working die originally finished with one year's date was pressed back into service for a later year by driving a new digit directly over the old one. Here, a die finished for 1854 had its final 4 partially obliterated and a 5 punched in its place, leaving the curved crossbar of the underlying 4 trapped inside the loop of the corrected 5. The variety was identified by Walter Breen in 1971 and is cataloged in the Cherrypickers' Guide as FS-301 and in the Wiley-Bugert die-marriage reference for the 1855 Philadelphia Arrows issue. Combined Philadelphia output for all 1855 halves stands at 759,500 pieces, of which the overdate represents a single repurposed die used for part of one emission. The Arrows flanking the date marked the reduced weight standard adopted under the Coinage Act of February 21, 1853.

Authentication runs through the date and nothing else. Under a 10x loupe, the angle-up serif and right-leaning crossbar of the buried 4 should sit visible inside the loop of the second 5, occupying the open space where the curve of the 5 closes back on itself. On well-struck early-state examples the ghost of the 4 reads cleanly as a die-struck feature with the same metal flow as the rest of the numeral; on later-state coins the underdigit softens as the die wore, and on heavily circulated pieces it can blur into the loop entirely. A repunched die, in plain terms, is one where a second punch was driven into the working die in a position that did not fully erase the first, and what a buyer is paying for is the proof of that earlier strike still visible inside the corrected digit. Supporting die-state markers vary by impression, with later pulls showing modest fatigue at the date and adjacent stars. The diagnostic remains satisfying through about Very Fine; below that, attribution should not be assumed without the ghost reading clearly.

For a date-and-mintmark set the 1855 Over 54 is optional, but for collectors who pursue Seated halves by Wiley-Bugert die marriage or who chase the major Cherrypickers' listings it is a required entry, and the only Seated half overdate to fill that slot. Survivors are scarce in any grade and uncommon in Mint State, where high-grade certified populations remain small at the major services. Demand has outrun supply because the variety is famous, the diagnostic is unambiguous under magnification, and no substitute exists elsewhere in the series for a collector wanting an overdate on the album page.
