About this coinHistory

The 1855-O Arrows Seated Liberty half dollar closes the brief Arrows subtype on the highest production note of the run. The Coinage Act of February 21, 1853 had cut the half dollar's authorized weight from 13.36 to 12.44 grams to halt the melting that followed the California Gold Rush, when silver's bullion price outran face value and full-weight coins disappeared into ingot pots as fast as the mints could ship them. To distinguish the new lighter pieces, the mint added arrowheads on either side of the date; rays surrounded the eagle on the 1853 reverse but were dropped after one year, leaving 1854 and 1855 with arrows only. New Orleans was the workhorse of the run, and its 1855 delivery of 3,688,000 pieces was the largest single-year output of the three-year subtype from any mint.

Strike runs typically New Orleans for the period: head and stars sharp on better dies, but the central drapery, the eagle's right wing tip, and the lower shield often come up flat from worn working dies pushed through bulk production. The arrowheads serve as a sharpness gauge, when the feather barbs on the lower arrow read crisp, the rest of the strike usually follows. Authentication centers on the arrows-flanking-date layout combined with the "O" mintmark below the eagle, above HALF DOL.; an 1855-O half without arrows does not exist as a regular issue, so any piece marketed that way is misattributed or altered. Circulated survivors are common from Good through Extremely Fine and serve as the standard type representative for the Arrows subtype at New Orleans. About Uncirculated coins appear with regularity, but the issue becomes a condition rarity at MS64 and above, where original luster and clean cheek and shield surfaces are scarce regardless of mintage.

For collectors, the 1855-O Arrows fills two slots: a final-year Arrows type coin and the most accessible Arrows-era branch-mint half. Date-and-mint set builders treat it as essential, while type collectors choose it because the high mintage keeps mid-grade prices reasonable. Prioritize even wear, original silver-gray patina, and a sharp arrow strike over chasing a higher number on the holder. For the full design arc and the weight-reduction story behind the arrowheads, see the Seated Liberty Half Dollar series history.
