The Philadelphia contribution came to 633,900 pieces, a moderate figure for the early With Motto window and roughly twelve times the 54,617 reported for the famous first-year 1870-CC sibling that is cataloged on its own page and ranks among the major Key Dates of the entire Seated series. The plain Philadelphia 1870 is the routine date-set acquisition for the year, available in circulated grades at standard pricing for an early Type 5 issue, while the Nevada cousin sits in a different price universe entirely. Specie payments were still suspended, the federal government would not return to full silver redemption until the Specie Payment Resumption Act took effect on January 1, 1879, so most of the year's Philadelphia delivery moved into Treasury vaults or bullion-settlement channels rather than ordinary commerce.

Strike on the 1870 Philadelphia is generally crisp for the period, with the shield vertical lines, eagle's neck feathers, and IN GOD WE TRUST ribbon coming up sharp on early die states; recurring softness gathers on Liberty's upper hair strands, the central obverse stars, and occasionally the lower edge of the motto scroll as dies aged. Authentication on circulated examples rests on the 12.44-gram struck weight set by the Coinage Act of February 21, 1853, a 30.6-millimeter diameter, and the standardized 154-reed edge that Wiley and Bugert document as universal across Liberty Seated halves from 1870 through 1875. Wiley-Bugert catalogs the year's working die marriages, with date position relative to the rock and reverse die cracks through the legend serving as the standard attribution markers; no specific WB number rises to landmark premium status for the date. Survival is broad in low circulated grades, thins above Extremely Fine, becomes scarce in choice About Uncirculated, and is genuinely rare at gem Mint State.
