About this coinHistory

The 1870-CC Seated Liberty half dollar is the first half dollar struck at the Carson City Mint and one of the most important Carson City coins in any series. The facility had been authorized years earlier specifically to convert silver from Nevada's Comstock Lode into federal coinage closer to where the metal was mined, and it began striking coins in February 1870. The mintage of 54,617 pieces is among the lowest for any Carson City half dollar, and combined with the coin's status as the inaugural CC half, this issue carries premiums well beyond what its raw rarity figures would suggest. It is universally recognized as a major key date in the Seated Liberty half series.

Authentication is the single most important step before buying any 1870-CC at the prices it commands. Because added-mintmark fakes (a common 1870-P date with a "CC" altered or applied to the reverse) circulate among unsuspecting buyers, inspect the surface around and beneath the CC mintmark for tooling marks, granularity that differs from the surrounding field, or a mintmark that sits too high, too low, or in the wrong horizontal position relative to the eagle's tail feathers. Both C's should be fully formed with the correct serif shape and even spacing. Strike quality on genuine examples is often soft on the head and the eagle's shield, a byproduct of the new Carson City facility working out die pressure and alignment issues, so a slightly mushy strike is not in itself a red flag. Survival reality is harsh: most pieces saw heavy use in the rough mining-camp economy of Nevada and the Great Basin, and the population skews heavily toward Good and Very Good, with Fine grades scarce, Very Fine genuinely difficult, and anything Extremely Fine or higher truly rare. Mint State coins exist only in single digits and trade at five-figure prices when they appear. Any high-grade example, and any raw piece offered at a price that seems too low to be true, should be certified by PCGS or NGC before money changes hands.

Demand for the 1870-CC has always been broad because the coin satisfies three different collector groups at once: Seated Liberty half date collectors need it to complete the series, Carson City type collectors prize it as the first CC half, and first-year-of-issue specialists value it as the cornerstone of CC silver coinage. That triple demand has held values firm through every market cycle.
