About this coinHistory

Denver's early 1917 Walking Liberty production carried over the obverse mintmark layout from the previous year, placing the D below IN GOD WE TRUST before Mint Director F.H. von Engelken's February 14, 1917 directive moved the mark to the reverse. The 1917-D Obverse Mintmark variety totaled 765,400 coins, a figure smaller than any 1917 Philadelphia output and one that places this issue among the genuine semi-keys of the series. The variety captures a specific window of Mint policy in transition, when Denver continued striking with obverse-mintmark dies until the order took practical effect and reverse-mintmark dies arrived in working condition. Collectors pursue this issue precisely because of that historical anchor; the obverse layout closes a brief design chapter that began with the 1916 inaugurals.

Strike quality on the 1917-D Obverse Mintmark runs softer than Philadelphia's same-year output, with Liberty's left hand and the skirt thumb showing the chronic weakness the high-relief design imposed on every branch. Eagle breast feathers and the central talon on the reverse must be inspected for full detail before paying a Full Strike premium. Authentication begins with the 12.50 gram weight and 30.61 mm diameter, then turns immediately to the mintmark itself, since this variety is a prime target for added-mintmark forgeries created by punching a D onto a 1917 Philadelphia coin. The genuine D sits below the motto with a broad, serifed profile and proper field-depth tooling around it; any mintmark that floats above the surrounding metal or shows tool marks from punching should be referred to Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) or Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) for verification before purchase. Reeded edge integrity matters too, because some altered pieces show subtle seam disturbance from the addition process.

Populations are reasonable through VF and XF, narrow at AU, and remain scarce in Mint State, with MS65 examples genuinely difficult to locate and Full Strike Gems exceptionally so. The variety pairs naturally with the 1917-D Reverse Mintmark and the obverse-mintmark 1917-S in any focused subset, and informed collectors often acquire both Denver varieties together to document the policy shift. The transition order itself and the Weinman design's broader history are addressed in the Walking Liberty Half Dollar series history.
