About this coinHistory

San Francisco's early 1917 Walking Liberty production carried the S mintmark on the obverse below IN GOD WE TRUST, the layout the Mint had used since the 1916 inaugurals. The 1917-S Obverse Mintmark variety totaled 952,000 coins, struck before Mint Director F.H. von Engelken's February 14, 1917 order took practical effect at the western facility. The variety is a genuine semi-key of the series, harder to locate in higher grades than its mintage alone suggests because San Francisco coinage of this period saw heavy commercial circulation in the Pacific economy and few coins were saved at issue. Adolph A. Weinman's design with Liberty striding toward sunrise and an eagle perched on a mountain crag found its hardest test at San Francisco in 1917, where die life and strike consistency lagged behind the eastern facilities.

Strike quality on the 1917-S Obverse Mintmark is the weakest of the four 1917 varieties as a group, with Liberty's left hand and the skirt thumb showing pronounced softness even on coins that grade Mint State. Eagle breast feathers and the central talon on the reverse demand close inspection before any Full Strike premium is paid, and Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) reward strong detail with significant price separation. Authentication begins with the 12.50 gram weight and 30.61 mm diameter, then moves to the S punch itself, since added-mintmark forgeries created from 1917 Philadelphia coins target this variety regularly. A genuine S is small with a thin profile, tilted slightly on the original dies, and any S that appears too crisp, too vertical, or shows tool marks at its base should be set aside for service verification.

Populations are reasonable through F and VF but thin meaningfully at XF and AU, with Mint State coins genuinely scarce and MS65 examples a major step up in price and difficulty. Full Strike Gems are exceptional rarities and commanding auction results follow. The variety pairs naturally with the 1917-S Reverse Mintmark and the 1917-D Obverse Mintmark in any subset built around the policy transition, and informed collectors often pursue all three Denver and San Francisco obverse-mintmark issues together. The Weinman design's full history and the mintmark transition timeline are documented in the Walking Liberty Half Dollar series history.
