San Francisco delivered 1,552,000 Walking Liberty halves in 1919, the highest of the three 1919 mintages but still low enough to place the issue firmly in semi-key territory and round out the demanding 1919 trio. The S mintmark sits on the reverse at the lower-left rock beneath the eagle's tail feathers, in the position established for all branch-mint Walkers from 1917 forward. The 1919-S is most often discussed alongside the 1919-D as a paired condition rarity, since both share extremely tough strike characteristics and aggressive premium structures in upper mint state. Date-set builders who finish the 1919 group typically describe it as the hardest single year in the Walker run before the 1921 keys arrive.
Strike quality is the central concern. Liberty's left hand and the skirt thumb come weak on nearly every 1919-S, and the eagle's breast feathers and central talon are soft on the great majority of survivors. San Francisco dies that year produced coins that often look smooth in the trouble zones even on technically uncirculated pieces. Full Strike examples are scarce at MS63 and condition rarities at MS65 and above. Authentication checks include the 12.50 g weight and 30.61 mm diameter, inspection of the reeded edge, and very careful examination of the S mintmark since added-S forgeries on 1919-P hosts target this date specifically. The genuine 1919 S punch shows balanced curves and a consistent serif treatment, and the surrounding field should display undisturbed luster flow.
Population reports from Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) indicate that gem 1919-S Walkers are scarce, with MS65 supply constrained and MS66 examples genuinely rare. Full-strike gems command meaningful premiums over the typical certified coin at the same grade. Most collectors place the 1919-S behind the 1919-D in strike difficulty but ahead of the Philadelphia issue in market premium at choice mint state.
