About this coinHistory

The 1849 proof large cent was produced at the Philadelphia Mint during the year the California Gold Rush reached full intensity. Tens of thousands of prospectors flooded west, and gold began arriving at eastern ports in staggering quantities. The flood of gold would eventually destabilize the ratio between gold and silver coins, leading Congress to reduce silver coin weights in 1853. The humble copper cent was not directly affected, but the economic upheaval set in motion forces that would end the large cent denomination within a decade.

Proof production for 1849 followed the established pattern: polished dies, hand-selected planchets, individual strikes on a screw press. The collector community remained small but was growing. The first American coin auction had taken place in 1838, and by 1849, occasional sales of coin collections were generating interest in numismatics as a pursuit. The 1849 proof large cent survives in very small numbers, a quiet artifact from a year of extraordinary national upheaval.
