About this coinHistory

The 1850 proof large cent was struck at the Philadelphia Mint during a year of rapid national expansion. California had applied for statehood, the Compromise of 1850 was reshaping the political map, and the population of the United States had reached 23 million. The Mint produced millions of large cents for daily commerce, and a small handful of proof specimens for the growing number of Americans who collected coins.

By 1850, the collector base had expanded beyond the original circle of wealthy Philadelphia antiquarians. Collectors in New York, Boston, and Baltimore were actively pursuing proof coins from the Mint. The process for obtaining one was still informal: write a letter, enclose payment, and hope the Mint obliged. Proof planchets were chosen for their clean surfaces, and the dies were freshly polished before each impression. The 1850 proof large cent is a scarce coin. Population estimates suggest fewer than twenty survivors in all conditions, each one a carefully made specimen from the midpoint of the nineteenth century.
