About this coinHistory

The 1852 proof large cent was struck at the Philadelphia Mint during a year when American coin collecting was gaining real momentum. Small coin auctions were becoming more frequent in eastern cities, and collectors were beginning to trade by mail. The demand for proof coins, while still tiny by later standards, was large enough that the Mint recognized it as a recurring obligation rather than an occasional favor.

The 1852 proof was struck from dies polished to a mirror finish, using planchets inspected for surface quality. The striking was done on a hand press at slow speed to ensure complete metal flow into every detail of the design. The contrast between the reflective fields and the raised portrait of Liberty is sharper on a proof than on any circulation strike, no matter how well preserved. Surviving 1852 proofs are scarce. They represent a period when the Mint was beginning to treat proof production as a regular, if small, part of its annual operations.
