1853 Proof

The 1853 proof large cent was produced during one of the most consequential years in American monetary history. Congress passed the Act of February 21, 1853, reducing the weight of silver half dimes, dimes, quarters, and half dollars to prevent melting and hoarding. The copper cent was untouched by the legislation, but the broader reform signaled that Congress was willing to reshape the coinage when economic conditions demanded it. The large cent's own reckoning would come four years later.

Proof production for 1853 followed the established method: polished dies, selected planchets, hand-press strikes. The collector market was growing steadily.
