About this coinHistory

The 1854 proof large cent was produced at the Philadelphia Mint during a year when the denomination's future was already uncertain. Pattern coins for the smaller Flying Eagle cent were being discussed, and Mint officials understood that the large copper cent would not survive much longer. The proof cents struck in 1854 were among the last produced before the denomination's final three years.

By the mid-1850s, the Mint's approach to proof coinage was becoming more systematic. Collectors could request proof coins with greater reliability than in the early 1840s, when obtaining a specimen required personal connections. The number of collectors had grown from a handful to perhaps a few hundred, and the Mint was beginning to see proof sales as a regular part of its operations. The 1854 proof large cent was struck with polished dies on a hand press, each coin receiving individual attention. Survivors are scarce, each one a late example of the large cent in its finest form.
