The 1808 large cent introduced John Reich's Classic Head design, replacing the Draped Bust that had been in use since 1796. Reich, a German-born engraver who had been hired as Assistant Engraver in 1807, was tasked with redesigning all American coinage. The large cent was among the last denominations to receive his treatment. Liberty faces left wearing a wide headband inscribed LIBERTY, her hair gathered in curls. The reverse carries a new wreath design with the denomination.
Reich had been an indentured servant whose passage to America was paid through labor. Thomas Jefferson recognized his talent and recommended his appointment to the Mint as early as 1801, but Chief Engraver Robert Scot, protective of his position, blocked the hire for years. When Reich finally joined the Mint in 1807, he produced designs for the half dollar, half eagle, cent, and other denominations in rapid succession. His Classic Head is bolder and more compact than Scot's Draped Bust, with a stronger sense of graphic design.
The 1808 is the first year of the Classic Head series and carries the appeal that first-year coins always generate. The mintage was healthy, and surviving examples are available across a reasonable grade range. Good to Fine is the most common condition, with Very Fine and above becoming progressively scarcer. The coin is a natural starting point for a Classic Head large cent collection.
Reich's contributions to American coinage are substantial but often overlooked. He designed coins for multiple denominations, worked under an employer who resented his presence, and resigned in frustration in 1817 after a decade without a raise. The 1808 large cent is the first evidence of his work on the denomination, and it represents a genuine improvement in design quality over the aging Draped Bust it replaced.
