The 1814 Plain 4 large cent uses a date punch where the numeral 4 has a clean horizontal bar without the small serifs found on the Crosslet 4 variety. The distinction is in the specific punch selected by the engraver, not in any broader design change. Both 4 types appear on 1814 large cents, and both carry the same historical significance as the final year of Classic Head production.
The Plain 4 is collected alongside the Crosslet 4 as one of two recognized varieties for the date. Neither is dramatically scarcer than the other, and a collector who wants both will find each acquirable with moderate effort. The more important characteristic for most buyers is condition and surface quality rather than which 4 type the coin displays.
The 1814 Plain 4, like its Crosslet counterpart, is the last Classic Head large cent. John Reich's design had appeared on the denomination for seven years (1808-1814), spanning the pre-war, wartime, and supply-crisis phases of the period. When copper coinage resumed in 1816, Reich himself had already resigned from the Mint, frustrated after a decade as Scot's underpaid and unappreciated assistant. His Classic Head design died with his departure, replaced by a new portrait for a new era.
