About this coinHistory

The 1817 large cent with 13 stars is the standard obverse arrangement for the Coronet Head design: thirteen stars surrounding Liberty's portrait, one for each of the original colonies. The 13-star configuration was the expected layout, and the vast majority of 1817 cents carry it. The interest in this variety is primarily as a contrast to the scarcer 15 Stars version from the same year.

The 1817 had a substantial mintage and is one of the more available early Coronet Head dates. Examples in Good to Fine are common by early large cent standards, and higher grades are attainable. The 13 Stars version is the affordable option for collectors who want the date without paying the variety premium that the 15 Stars commands.
