Coronet Head Large Cents

The designer of the Coronet Head cent is not known with certainty, though Robert Scot is generally credited as Chief Engraver at the time the dies were prepared. Scot was well past his prime by 1816, increasingly blind and relying on assistants for much of the detailed work. John Reich had left the Mint the year before, frustrated and underpaid, and no immediate replacement had been hired. The actual cutting of the Coronet Head dies may have fallen to one of the Mint's junior staff, possibly Christian Gobrecht, who was doing contract work for the Mint before his formal appointment years later, or possibly an unnamed assistant working under Scot's nominal supervision. Breen spent some effort trying to pin down the attribution and concluded that the question was essentially unanswerable with the surviving evidence. Whoever did the work produced a design that would last, in modified form, for over two decades.
