About this coinHistory

The 1824/2 overdate large cent shows a 4 punched over a 2 in the final digit of the date. The Mint reused an 1822 die, skipping the 1823 date entirely (or possibly updating an already-modified 1823/2 die further). The remnant of the 2 is visible beneath the 4 on well-preserved examples.

The 1824/2 is a recognized variety in the large cent series and carries a premium. Identification is most reliable on coins in Fine or better, where the date area retains enough detail to show the overpunched digit. The variety is part of the Coronet Head overdate sequence that includes the 1819/8, 1820/19, 1823/2, and 1826/5.
