About this coinHistory

The 1827 large cent was produced in solid quantity and is available in circulated grades. The coin is a standard mid-series Coronet Head date without significant varieties or production anomalies. Good to Fine examples appear regularly in the market, and the date is one of the more affordable entries in the series.

In 1827, the United States was in the middle of what historians call the Era of Good Feelings, though the name overstates the political calm. John Quincy Adams occupied the White House after the bitterly contested 1824 election, and Andrew Jackson was already campaigning to unseat him. The Erie Canal, completed in 1825, was transforming commerce in the Northeast by linking the Great Lakes to the Atlantic seaboard. Goods and people moved faster and more cheaply than ever before, and copper cents traveled with them. The Philadelphia Mint produced the nation's entire supply of cents from a single building on Seventh Street, using hand-operated screw presses that could strike roughly 40 coins per minute.
