About this coinHistory

The 1826/5 overdate large cent shows a 6 punched over a 5 in the final digit. The Mint reused an 1825 die, and the remnant of the 5 is visible beneath the 6. The variety completes the Coronet Head overdate sequence (1819/8, 1820/19, 1823/2, 1824/2, 1826/5) and is collected as part of that group.

The 1826/5 is identifiable on coins in Fine or better, where the straight vertical stroke of the 5 contrasts with the curved loop of the 6. Certification services attribute the overdate. The variety carries a premium over the standard 1826, proportional to the overdate's visibility and the coin's condition.
