About this coinHistory

The 1839/6 overdate large cent shows a 9 punched over a 6 in the final digit of the date. The Mint reused an 1836 die, updating the date by three years. The overdate is identifiable on well-preserved coins where the loop of the underlying 6 is visible beneath the 9. The variety is cataloged and carries a premium among overdate collectors.

The 1839/6 is unusual among Coronet Head overdates because the date gap between the original and updated digits is three years rather than the more typical one year. Reusing a die from 1836 for 1839 production suggests the die had been set aside for some time before being pressed back into service.
