The 1839 "Booby Head" is one of the most memorable variety names in American numismatics. The nickname refers to a portrait of Liberty that contemporary observers considered unattractive or silly-looking. Liberty's head appears disproportionately large, with an exaggerated, almost cartoonish quality that contrasts sharply with the more refined portraits on other 1839 dies.

The Booby Head was not an intentional design change but the result of a specific die cutter's interpretation of the portrait. The Mint used multiple die pairs in 1839, and some engravers produced dies that deviated noticeably from the standard.
