About this coinHistory

The 1819/8 overdate large cent shows a 9 punched over an 8 in the final digit of the date. The Mint repurposed an 1818 die by updating the date, a standard economy measure. The underlying 8 is visible as curved traces beneath the 9 on well-preserved examples.

The 1819/8 is one of several overdates in the Coronet Head series and carries a variety premium over the standard 1819. Identification requires examining the final digit under magnification, where the doubled impression is usually clear on coins in Fine or better. Certification services attribute the overdate.

Among Coronet Head overdates, the 1819/8 is moderately available. The overdate is not the rarest in the series, but it represents a production practice that gives the coin historical texture beyond its face value and date.
