About this coinHistory

The 1820 proof large cent was struck during the same period that the Randall Hoard coins were being produced for general circulation. While the Philadelphia Mint was pressing out millions of copper cents for commerce, a small number of proof impressions were made separately, using dies that had been polished to a mirror finish and planchets selected for clean, even surfaces. The contrast between a proof 1820 and a circulation-strike 1820 is dramatic: one survives with full reflectivity and complete hair detail, the other typically shows decades of pocket wear and environmental damage.

Proof production at the Mint in 1820 remained entirely informal. The Mint Director at the time was Samuel Moore, who took office that year. Moore would later expand the Mint's engagement with collectors, but in 1820 the institution still treated specimen coins as occasional favors rather than a revenue stream. The handful of proof 1820 cents that survive represent personal requests fulfilled one at a time. Ownership histories for these coins tend to begin with prominent early collectors and pass through landmark cabinet sales of the nineteenth century before reaching the modern market.
