About this coinHistory

The 1835 proof large cent was produced during a period of rapid economic expansion in the United States. Land speculation was booming, banks were multiplying, and paper money was everywhere. Copper cents, by contrast, remained the workhorse of small transactions: buying a newspaper, paying a toll, tipping a porter. The proof version of the coin existed in a different world entirely, made not for commerce but for the cabinets of a growing collector community.

The 1835 is also notable because some dies from this year carry the "Head of 1836" portrait, a slightly modified rendering of Liberty that anticipated changes formalized the following year. Whether the proof was struck from a standard 1835 die or a Head of 1836 die affects its classification. The striking process remained consistent: polished dies, clean planchet, multiple blows from the screw press. Christian Gobrecht had joined the Mint as an assistant engraver by this time, and his influence on die quality would become increasingly apparent in subsequent years. The surviving population of 1835 proof cents is very small.
