About this coinHistory

The 1819 proof large cent was produced at a time when the Philadelphia Mint made proof coins only by special arrangement. No order forms existed. No catalog listed prices. A collector or Mint official who wanted a specimen-quality cent spoke directly to the coinage department, and a pressman prepared the coin by hand: polishing the die faces, choosing a planchet free of flaws, and delivering multiple blows on the screw press to bring up every detail of the design. The mirrored fields on an 1819 proof are the product of that hand-polishing, not a mechanized process.

The 1819 is the fourth year of the Coronet Head design, and Robert Scot's portrait of Liberty was by then well established. Proof examples from this date preserve the design in a state of sharpness that ordinary commerce immediately began to erase. The number of surviving 1819 proof cents is extremely small. Most passed through the hands of early collectors like Matthew Stickney and Joseph Mickley before entering the broader market decades later. Each surviving example carries a provenance trail that specialists can often trace back to the mid-nineteenth century or earlier.
