About this coinHistory

The 1818 proof large cent belongs to the earliest generation of Coronet Head proofs. In 1818, the United States Mint had no formal proof coin program and no published price list for specimen strikes. A Mint officer, a visiting diplomat, or one of the handful of coin collectors in the country would make a personal request, and a coiner would oblige by polishing a pair of dies to a mirror finish, selecting a clean copper planchet of good color, and striking it on the screw press with extra force. The result was a coin with reflective fields and razor-sharp device detail that no circulation strike could match. Some early proofs received this treatment on the obverse only, leaving the reverse with a partially mirrored or even satin finish.

Fewer than a half-dozen 1818 proof cents are believed to survive. The buyers who originally acquired these coins were not hobbyists in the modern sense. They were men of means who collected curiosities: natural specimens, antiquities, medals, and occasionally coins. The American numismatic community barely existed in 1818. Joseph Mickley, often called the first systematic U.S. coin collector, would not begin assembling his collection for another decade. The 1818 proof cent, then, was made for an audience so small it could fit in a single room.
