About this coinHistory

The 1831 proof large cent was produced during the same year the Mint began experimenting with new coinage technologies. The old screw press that had produced every U.S. coin since 1792 was nearing the end of its useful life, and Mint officials were evaluating steam-powered alternatives. Proof coins in 1831, however, were still struck on the hand-operated press, where a skilled operator could control the force and number of blows with a precision that early steam presses could not yet match. The polished dies and selected planchets used for proofs demanded that control.

Chief Engraver William Kneass oversaw die production in 1831. Kneass had been in the position since 1824, and the dies he prepared were competent if not inspired. The proof cent captures his workmanship at its sharpest: the Coronet Head portrait with every curl defined, the thirteen stars individually pointed, the reverse wreath with visible leaf veining. The 1831 proof survives in very small numbers. Most known examples have pedigrees stretching back to nineteenth-century cabinet sales, where early proof coppers changed hands among a collector community that could still be counted in dozens rather than thousands.
