About this coinHistory

The 1832 proof large cent comes from a year when the nation was gripped by the Nullification Crisis. South Carolina threatened to refuse enforcement of federal tariffs, and President Andrew Jackson responded with a forceful declaration of federal authority. The political tension had no direct effect on the Mint's operations in Philadelphia, but it formed the backdrop of daily life for the officers and coiners who produced the nation's money. Proof coins continued to be made as they always had: quietly, by hand, for a small audience.

The 1832 proof was struck from dies polished to a mirror finish. Both Large Letters and Medium Letters reverse dies were used for circulation strikes that year, and the proof may correspond to either letter size. The striking process involved multiple impressions from the screw press, forcing copper into every recess of the die to produce complete, sharp devices surrounded by perfectly reflective fields. The number of surviving 1832 proof cents is very small. Auction records show infrequent appearances, and each sale is closely watched by the specialist community that collects early proof copper.
