About this coinHistory

The 1830 proof large cent was struck at a turning point in the early history of American coin collecting. By 1830, a recognizable collector community was forming in the eastern United States. Men like Joseph Mickley in Philadelphia, who had been collecting since the mid-1810s, were no longer isolated curiosities. Small networks of collectors exchanged coins by mail and in person, and the Mint was becoming aware that a modest but steady demand for specimen coins existed outside its walls.

The proof itself was made by the same process used since the late 1810s. A press operator polished the die faces to a mirror finish, chose a copper planchet with clean surfaces, and struck the coin with deliberate, repeated blows on the screw press. The 1830 proof preserves the Coronet Head design in full detail: every star point sharp, every hair strand visible, the reverse wreath and lettering complete. The number of surviving 1830 proof cents is very small, and the coin is priced at a level that reflects both its rarity and its place in the developing story of American numismatic culture.
