About this coinHistory

The 1820 Small Date uses compact numeral punches, producing shorter digits than the Large Date version. The variety is collected as a separate die marriage and may be slightly less common than the Large Date, though both are available to persistent collectors. Identification requires comparison with the Large Date or reference images.

Large cents in 1820 served as the primary small-value coin in American commerce. Paper currency existed, but many Americans distrusted banknotes, which could become worthless overnight if the issuing bank failed. A copper cent had intrinsic value: the metal in the coin was worth close to one cent. Shopkeepers, farmers, and dockworkers handled these coins daily, buying bread, cider, candles, and ferry crossings. The 1820 Small Date cent entered that economy alongside its Large Date counterpart, and the two varieties circulated together without any distinction in everyday use. The difference in numeral size was a production detail, not a commercial one.
