About this coinHistory

The 1820/19 overdate large cent shows a 0 punched over a 9 in the final digit. The Mint reused an 1819 die, updating the date for the new year. The remnant of the 9's curved tail is visible beneath the 0 on well-preserved coins. The variety is cataloged separately and carries a premium among early large cent collectors.

The 1820/19 is one of the more popular Coronet Head overdates because the diagnostic is relatively clear. The round shape of the 0 contrasts with the curved tail of the underlying 9, making the overdate identifiable on coins in Fine or better without difficulty. Lower-grade coins may require magnification for confident attribution.
