About this coinHistory

The 1839 Type of 1838 proof large cent uses the standard Head of 1838 portrait in proof format. The proof was struck from polished dies with the conventional portrait style, making it the most conservatively designed of the 1839 proof issues. Surviving examples are rare, collected within the Coronet Head proof series, and carry pricing appropriate to early proof copper.

The 1839 is the final year of the Coronet Head design on the large cent. After 1839, Christian Gobrecht's Braided Hair design would replace it. The 1839 proof, in its Type of 1838 form, is the last Coronet Head proof struck for the denomination.
