About this coinHistory

The 1832 Medium Letters variety uses the compact reverse lettering. Both 1832 letter varieties are available and neither carries a dramatic premium over the other.

The year 1832 brought the Nullification Crisis to a head, as South Carolina declared federal tariffs null and void within its borders. President Jackson responded by threatening military force, and Congress eventually passed a compromise tariff. The political drama played out far from the Mint's coining floor, but the economic uncertainty it created rippled through commerce. The large cent remained a stable unit of value in a monetary system where paper banknotes fluctuated wildly in reliability. The Philadelphia Mint struck 1832 cents in solid numbers, feeding them into an economy that stretched from the Atlantic seaboard to the expanding frontier settlements of Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri.
