About this coinHistory

The 1833 large cent was produced in solid quantity and is available in circulated grades. The coin does not carry the letter-size variety distinction of its immediate neighbors, simplifying the acquisition for date collectors. A single example in Good to Fine completes the year without variety complications.

In 1833, President Jackson began his campaign against the Second Bank of the United States, withdrawing federal deposits and redistributing them to state banks. The "Bank War" would reshape American finance for decades. The same year, the American Anti-Slavery Society was founded, and Oberlin College became one of the first American institutions to admit both men and women. The Mint in Philadelphia continued its steady output of copper cents, the one denomination that ordinary Americans handled more than any other. Paper money and gold coins served larger transactions, but the copper cent was the coin of daily life: the price of a candle, a newspaper, or a glass of cheap ale.
