About this coinHistory

The 1831 Medium Letters variety uses the more compact reverse lettering. Both 1831 letter varieties are available in circulated grades and collected as separate die marriages by variety specialists.

In 1831, Nat Turner's slave rebellion in Virginia shocked the nation and intensified the national debate over slavery. William Lloyd Garrison launched The Liberator, an abolitionist newspaper, in Boston. Cyrus McCormick demonstrated his mechanical reaper, a machine that would eventually transform American agriculture. The Mint, operating in its original building on Seventh Street in Philadelphia, was beginning to explore steam-powered coining presses to replace the hand-operated screw presses that had been in use since the 1790s. Large cents remained the backbone of small-value commerce. A cent bought meaningful goods in 1831: a penny could purchase a small loaf of bread or a cup of cider. The coins passed through countless hands before being lost, hoarded, or worn beyond recognition.
