About this coinHistory

The 1827 proof large cent was produced during a relatively quiet year at the Philadelphia Mint. Coinage operations had settled into a routine after more than three decades at the first permanent Mint building on Seventh Street. The proof cent was made using the same artisanal method as all early proofs: dies polished by hand until their faces could produce mirrored fields, a planchet chosen for clean surfaces and correct weight, and striking performed with multiple blows from the screw press to ensure complete metal flow into every detail of the design.

By 1827, the small community of American coin collectors was beginning to coalesce. Collectors corresponded by letter, traded coins through intermediaries, and occasionally visited the Mint in person to request specimen strikes. The Mint accommodated these requests without formal procedures or set prices. Each proof cent was essentially a custom product. The 1827 proof survives in extremely small numbers, and auction appearances are infrequent enough that each sale draws attention from specialists in the early large cent series.
