The 1802 1/000 variety repeats the fraction error seen on the 1801: the denominator reads 000 instead of 100, giving the coin a stated value of one-thousandth of a dollar. The error resulted from the engraver punching three 0 digits when the first should have been a 1. The Mint's willingness to use the die despite the error, for the second consecutive year, suggests the fraction was considered a minor design element not worth wasting a die over.
The 1802 1/000 is less famous than the 1801 3 Errors variety but is still collected as a recognized die error. Given the 1802's enormous mintage, the 1/000 variety may have been struck in greater numbers than its 1801 counterpart, though survival rates for the specific die marriage determine actual availability. The variety carries a modest premium and is identifiable on coins in Good or better condition.
