Draped Bust Large Cents

Robert Scot designed the Draped Bust cent, though he did not work from his own imagination. The obverse portrait was adapted from a drawing attributed to Gilbert Stuart, the foremost portraitist in America at the time, depicting a society woman named Ann Willing Bingham. Stuart himself may not have intended the sketch for coinage use, and whether Scot worked directly from a Stuart drawing or from an intermediary copy has been debated without resolution. Breen believed the attribution was solid; others have been less certain. Regardless of the source, Scot produced an obverse that looked markedly different from the Liberty Cap design it replaced. Liberty now faced right with her hair tied loosely behind her and a cloth draped across her bust, a softer and more fashionable image that reflected late-eighteenth-century taste. Scot had been Chief Engraver since November 1793, and by 1796 he had several years of die-cutting experience behind him. The reverse, showing a wreath enclosing the denomination ONE CENT within the fraction 1/100, was Scot's work as well, and it remained essentially unchanged throughout the series.
