The 1801 "3 Errors" variety is one of the most popular error coins in early American copper. Three distinct mistakes appear on a single reverse die: the fraction reads 1/000 instead of 1/100, the word UNITED was engraved with an inverted U that looks like two vertical strokes (reading IINITED), and only one stem appears at the base of the wreath where two should be. Three errors on one coin, each a separate engraving mistake, all surviving into production on a die the Mint used anyway.
The concentration of errors on a single die raises questions about quality control at the early Mint. Either the die was inspected and the errors were deemed insufficient to justify discarding it, or the die was not inspected at all. Given the cost of die production and the Mint's chronic resource constraints, the first explanation is more likely. The die worked. The errors were cosmetic. The Mint used it.
The 3 Errors variety is among the most sought-after die varieties in the Draped Bust large cent series. The combination of three identifiable mistakes on one coin gives it a narrative appeal that single-error varieties lack. Each error is independently verifiable: count the zeros in the fraction, examine the U in UNITED, check the A in STATES. A coin where all three are clearly visible in Fine or better condition is a specimen that collectors actively compete for.
Pricing for the 3 Errors variety carries a significant premium over standard 1801 cents. The coin appears in the Red Book and other standard references, giving it visibility beyond the specialist early large cent market. For a collector looking for a single early large cent variety that tells a memorable story, the 1801 3 Errors is one of the strongest candidates.
