About this coinHistory

The 1801 100/000 variety shows a corrected fraction error on the reverse. The denominator was initially punched as 000, and a 1 was then punched over the first 0 to produce 100. The correction is visible as a composite digit where both the original 0 and the corrected 1 are partially visible. The fraction reads 1/100 at first glance, but magnification reveals the underlying 000 beneath the corrected first digit.

The 100/000 error documents a moment of correction at the Mint. Someone noticed the 1/000 error (or a similar error on this die) and attempted to fix it by overpunching the first zero with a 1. The fix worked in the sense that the fraction now approximates the correct reading, but it left physical evidence of the original mistake in the die.

The variety is collected alongside the uncorrected 1/000 variety and the famous 3 Errors variety as part of the 1801 large cent's error family. Together, these three varieties make the 1801 one of the most interesting dates in the Draped Bust series for error collectors. The 100/000 carries a variety premium, with pricing scaled to the clarity of the overpunched digit and the coin's overall condition.
