About this coinHistory

The 1800 large cent was struck in substantially larger quantity than the preceding 1799, which had been produced in tiny numbers. Copper supply had improved, and the Mint delivered a meaningful output for the year. The 1800 is considerably more available than the 1799, offering collectors a more accessible entry point into the early Draped Bust series.

The design continues Scot's Draped Bust portrait with the Second Hair Style that had become standard by 1798. Die varieties exist within the date, and Sheldon numbers catalog each die marriage. For a general collector, the 1800 is a straightforward date without the drama of the preceding key date or the overdate complications that affect several other Draped Bust years.

Most surviving 1800 large cents grade between Good and Fine, with the typical brown surfaces and occasional problems that characterize early copper. Very Fine is achievable with patience, and the date's higher mintage means finding one in presentable condition is a realistic goal. The 1800 large cent is one of the more approachable dates in the pre-1800 portion of the Draped Bust series.
